Sazerac Rye Carter's Supermarket Store Pick

Today's review is a Sazerac Rye Store Pick from Carter's Supermarket in Denham Springs, La. This is my first time trying a pick from Carter's as they have only recently begun selling whiskey in stores. The barrel was released for sale on January 12, 2024 with a retail price of $25.99 plus tax.

Not long ago, I did a Sazerac pick selection through a partnership with Louisiana Bourbon Hunters and Oak Point Fresh Markets that was amazing and I am anxious to see how this Carter's Pick compares. Until recently, I have not been the biggest fan of Sazerac Rye but have since changed my tune. Two of my whiskey enthusiast friends are joining me in sampling this pick and I am very excited for the collaboration of thoughts.

Before we get into the actual notes, I found a neat and historical write up regarding Sazerac Rye. All the credit for the history of Sazerac Rye belongs to the Buffalo Trace Distillery:

"The One and Only New Orleans Original. Sazerac Rye Whiskey symbolized the tradition and history of New Orleans. Rye Whiskey dates back to the 1800's, around a time when saloon, veiled as Coffee , began lining the streets of New Orleans. It was at the Sazerac Coffee House on Royal Street where local patrons were served toddies made with Rye Whiskey and Peychaud's Bitters. The libation became known as the "Sazerac" and America's first branded cocktail was born. This is the whiskey that started it all!"

Being a native of Louisiana, this is a local favorite and is available at an amazing price point. In addition, it comes with a great historical note based upon its New Orleans origins.

Notes:

Sazerac Rye

No Age statement but normally 6 to 7 years

Buffalo Trace Distillery

Cask number 104

Proof 90

Origin New Orleans, La.

Bottled for Carter's Supermarket

Price $25.99 plus tax

Appearance:

  • Tawny in color close to Copper

  • Clear Clarity

  • Legs are thin and fast

  • No Beading

Nose:

  • Orange zest with rye spice. Standard Saz nose. Light clove. The nose was light but once you find it, you will get some of the typical Saz aromas.

Palate:

  • Sweet and light. Orange fruity flavors with classic rye spices. Zest with baking spices towards the end. Pallet is light and notes of rye spices. Slight palate, little more of a typical Saz pour on flavor.

Finish:

  • Short and Dry. Light black pepper with light clove and semi sweetness.

Overall:

3 out of 5 Stars

  • I was not disappointed in this pick at all but did not see much of a difference from the normal available Saz. The bottle is nice and has light flavors but does not distinguish itself as much different from the norm. I enjoyed the pour and feel that for the price and history it's a great buy. I can see this pick being a great bottle for an Old Fashion.
